Description

The Croque Madame is a luxurious French twist on the classic ham and cheese sandwich. This dish features layers of ham, Gruyère cheese, creamy béchamel sauce, and is crowned with a perfectly fried egg. Its combination of textures and rich flavors makes it perfect for brunch, lunch, or even a sophisticated dinner.

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 2 slices of white bread
  • 2 slices of ham
  • 2 slices of Gruyère cheese
  • 1 tablespoon of butter, softened
  • 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 cup of béchamel sauce
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C).
  2. Spread Dijon mustard on one side of each slice of bread.
  3. Layer a slice of Gruyère cheese and a slice of ham on top of the mustard side of one bread slice. Place the second slice of bread on top to assemble the sandwich.
  4. In a pan over medium heat, melt butter and cook the sandwich until golden and crispy, about 2-3 minutes per side.
  5. Transfer the sandwich to a baking sheet, top with béchamel sauce, and a sprinkle of cheese. Bake for 5 minutes or until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
  6. Meanwhile, fry an egg in a pan until the whites are set but the yolk remains runny.
  7. Place the fried egg on top of the baked sandwich, season with salt and pepper, and serve immediately.
